Historical Heritage: The Selmecbánya Legacy

The University of Sopron carries forward the traditions of the world’s first technical university, founded in Selmecbánya (now Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia) in 1735. After World War II, the faculty relocated to Sopron, bringing with them centuries of academic excellence and unique student traditions that survive to this day .

This heritage creates an unparalleled student experience:

  1. Trade Functions: 150-year-old tradition where students organize supervised social events with strict house rules and camaraderie
  2. Initiation Ceremonies: Older students (“firma”) initiate freshmen (“balek”) into the university community, preserving and passing down traditions
  3. Valete Ceremony: Graduates bid farewell to the university and city by walking darkened streets with mining lamps and torches
  4. Faculty-Specific Customs: Arts students hold initiations at Zsennye Castle; graduates drive nails into oak columns in their faculty buildings

This living heritage instills values of solidarity, responsibility, dedication, discipline, and student camaraderie that distinguish Sopron graduates .
